Gap

03月 24, 2007

From yesterday’s Zaobao

1. 政府薪金不能远落后于私企
总理:4月9日公布部长与行政官加薪详情

(ST said something about closing the gap btwn minister pay and private sector pay)

Fair enough. They probably deserve better- I don’t want to start a debate on that.

But  I am rather concerned with another issue.

Is the ministers, with their soon-to-be higher income, help the citizen with closing another gap— the rich-poor gap?

Tolerance, people!

I copy this entry from Mr Wang’s blog.

What We Believe

Muslims don’t drink alcohol. Hindus don’t eat beef. However, in Singapore, they don’t try to prohibit non-Muslims or non-Hindus from consuming alcohol or beef. Why?

Because the freedom of religion exists in Singapore. The first aspect of this freedom is that each of us is free to practise our own faith. The second aspect, which follows logically, is that we shouldn’t impose our own faith on others.

Just as we worship the gods of our own choice, so too should others be permitted to worship the gods of their own choice. Similarly if you choose not to drink alcohol or not to eat pork, that’s fine – but you shouldn’t stop others from doing so. Especially if they don’t share your religion.

Mutual respect and tolerance is the basic principle on which an inter-religious society like Singapore can hold itself together, in relative harmony.

Recently I learned from Yawning Bread’s blog that the National Council of Churches of Singapore is seeking to criminalise lesbianism. I find this disturbing. I sense a potential threat to the freedom of religion in Singapore.

If church leaders merely stood up in their own churches and preached to their own congregations “It is wrong to be lesbian”, I would not feel so disturbed. For those who believed such a statement, I would feel a little sorry, but it is ultimately their own church. Within their own church, they should have the freedom to do what they like, as long as they don’t impose their beliefs on others.

But now the NCCS is advocating the criminalisation of lesbianism in Singapore. The NCCS considers lesbianism to be “abhorrent and deviant“, and wants to make it an offence for any lesbian, to be lesbian. They want such a law to apply to all female Singaporeans, whether they are Christians or not.

That is disturbing. Very disturbing.

When I read this, a few words came into my mind.

One word- disgust.
Second word- bigot
Third word- uneducated
Lastly- Go to hell

So, if, I say “if”, I dislike Christianity, and i think it’s against my belief and against my set of norms for doing things, should I advocate to criminalise Christianity too??

Any religions are almost always good for anyone, because the basis of any religion is typically to ask u to be a good, better person.

Problem is always the messenger.

Twisting God’s words.

That’s why we are called layman.

I wonder if twisting God’s words will make u go to hell.

***

I recall, during national service, I had a supervisor who is very pious. She “god blesses” everyone who passes by her path.

However, when u incur her wrath, she goes cursing “God will curse you”.

I don’t really think that’s the way to spread the religion. :|

Not so prepared

03月 15, 2007

So apparently Taiwan is a very popular destination….

before i have even booked my own tickets, friends seem to be flocking to taipei in the next few months, and some have already booked the tickets.

April- Fiona, G
May- PY, YC and elf
June- Rrrrrr
July- Sf
August- Alicia?

As you can see, I may not be so home-sick afterall.

***
Not so prepared for the trip. My boss asked if I need a cab or a van for putting my luggage.

I shrugged and said- I think I will probably bring just one luggage and a hand-carry, so a cab would be good enough.

Well, I should be just bringing a few shirts, pants, cds… and at most, a portable stereo.

Related this to Debbie who was in shock. Apparently, she brought her bed and wardrobe to Saipan. (she’s working overseas as well)

I am easy maintanence.

+
Work visa’s a pain as well.

Needed to test for HIV, urine drug test, syphllis, among others.

Doctor looked at me and asked, ” may i know what occupation u r in?”

She probably thinks I am a whore. :|

In Brisbane

03月 12, 2007

Thanks, Mark, for updating me about the show.

I feel bad when Mark told me that Auntie-ah-ma “felt resigned” about my leaving. I am sure listeners (the few that i have.. haha) can get over my leaving, but I do feel guilty as I didn’t warn any of you in advance.  My fault.

As many would know, she’s a real dearie who had been supportive for a long while. So, do me a favor- if you do get to talk to her, let her know how i feel and apologise on my behalf. (feels like i am talking abt a girlfriend. haha)

I am currently in Brisbane, on a short holiday. Will be heading to Gold Coast in an hour’s time. Came here to visit some friends. back to work on wednesday.

I have confirmed my ticket to Taipei. Will leave Singapore on 8th April and start work on the 9th of April. Yeaps, it will be all work.

thanks for your support again and will probably update this space as and when possible.

cheerios.

A classic case of self-delusion.

Pretty amused by this piece of news. Seriously, poor wang jie. and what makes him think he can sing?

- An extract from Straits Times

Life! – Life Buzz

You’ve heard him speak, now hear John Chen sing

IT’S been a year since he made his last speech in Parliament, but retired politician John Chen is set to make his voice heard once more – as a recording artiste on his own album.

The former Minister of State yesterday signed a $50,000 production deal with media company Scorpio East. It will also be responsible for distributing the album.

But he explains to Life! that he has been performing since his primary school days, even though he has no formal music training.

Nowadays, he busies himself as the chairman of corporate finance house SAC Capital, but finds time to host a one-hour radio show on Capital 95.8FM every Tuesday at 10pm, where he plays and sings golden oldies.

He has also performed on stage, from getais to constituency celebrations, and made his TV debut last December on Channel 8′s variety show PSC Night.

He is scheduled to sing at a solo concert in September being organised by grassroots leaders from his former constituency Hong Kah.

He says: ‘Everyone was telling me, ‘With your voice, you should cut your own album’. And so I did.’

He likens his voice to that of Taiwanese crooner Dave Wang Chieh, who is known for his melancholic delivery, and adds: ‘I may not be as good as professional singers, but I think my voice can touch others.

When asked how many albums he might sell, he says ’100,000′, more than twice the number of copies Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah’s debut album Blessings sold.

Told that this is a very big figure for local album sales, he cut it down to 50,000, but says confidently: ‘Some of my associates from China have already promised to order 500 or 1,000 copies.’

Farewell

p.s.还没决定是否要继续保持着网页-but do watch this space for any update. :)
